Passing Through by Bill Ward

Posted by Gallery Staff on September 06, 2012

Bill Ward is a photographer and actor.  He played the misogynistic builder Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street for 280 episodes between 2003 and 2007.His new collection of photographs, “Passing Through”, is a celebration of the places that made the deepest impression on him during his time working in Manchester, both on Coronation Street, and at The Royal Exchange Theatre.

It's an exploration of many of the things that have intrigued him about the area: the constant juxtaposition of old and new, industrialisation and reinvention, water and dry land. How each generation has left, and continues to leave, their own unique footprint.

Water remains a constant theme in his pictures.  Born and bred in the North East, his grandfather ran one of the last great shipyards on the Tyne, and he spent much of his childhood on the vast Northumbrian beaches getting very wet indeed.  He also has a degree in History (class 2.1) from Bristol University.

Most of the pictures he takes are at the extremes of the day, first or last light, usually with long exposures, sometimes up to 3 minutes, and occasionally beyond.  He uses a Pentax K5 digital SLR, and Pentax 645 medium format film camera.

His photography is a response, and in many ways an antidote, to the time he spends as an actor working in the public eye.

This collection is a unique collaboration with Webbs Fine Art Gallery.  Each print is available in a limited edition of 10 only, is printed on Kodak Endura metallic paper, signed and numbered, and available exclusively through Webbs Fine Art Gallery.
